The MGate MB3170I-T is a single-port, wide-temperature, isolated Modbus gateway from Moxa. Part of the MGate MB3170 series, it facilitates bidirectional protocol conversion between Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU/ASCII. It is designed to integrate legacy serial-based Modbus devices—such as instruments, variable-frequency drives (VFDs), and PLCs—into industrial Ethernet networks, serving as a core conversion unit for networking serial devices within DCS and SCADA systems. The gateway features a built-in protocol parsing engine that supports bidirectional proxy forwarding: it translates commands from a Modbus TCP master on the Ethernet side into Modbus RTU/ASCII polls for downstream serial slaves, and subsequently repackages the data returned by these serial devices into Modbus TCP format for transmission back to the host system. It supports ID mapping and IP/port routing, allowing multiple TCP masters to access the serial bus simultaneously. Furthermore, it includes built-in traffic prioritization, ensuring that urgent messages are forwarded first to maintain the real-time performance of control commands. The serial channel is equipped with 2kV optical isolation to eliminate ground-loop interference, and the “-T” designation denotes the wide-temperature version.
