In many strip processes, the strip tension inherently produces a horizontal force component on a roll… or, by design, it can be made to do so.
Using this horizontal force component to measure strip tension can be highly advantageous. The load cell can be sized to measure just the strip tension, excluding the tare weight of the roll. The result is optimized measurement accuracy.
Another advantage is that ABB’s unique horizontal load cell – specifically designed to measure this force component – provides stiffness levels and overload tolerances in all force directions that are significantly greater than what can be achieved with vertical load cells.
ABB’s web tension system is the perfect choice for measuring web tension in paper mills or converting applications such as printing, laminating, coating, slipping, sheeting etc.
Accurate web tension measurement is a prerequisite for keeping the web tension constant within the desired range, during both acceleration and deceleration. This allows for optimal web quality, increasing process uptime and preventing web breaks. The system is proven to be exceptionally robust and resilient to high forces as well as harsh environments. The load cells are calibration free, can withstand overloads up to 10 times the nominal force, and have an impressive life length.
The Vertical Mini Series PillowBlock is a “true” vertical force load cell, and measures only the total sum of the force components that are at a right angle to its top surface.
The load cell is designed to measure vertical forces in both directions in most types of web processing machinery used in the converting, plastic film, printing, textiles, and other industries.

Pressductor PillowBlock horizontal load cells are ideal in applications characterized by low tension levels, heavy rolls and high operating speeds – a scenario often encounted in the paper industry.
The PillowBlock comes in three versions: The standard version, PFTL 101A/B, is often used for accurate measurement in the paper industry, for instance paper machines, calenders, coaters and winders.
For web tension measurement in dryer sections in paper machines, the mill duty version, PFTL 101AE/BE, is recomended. This version has a fixed connection cable and a degree of protection of IP 66, which provides accurate and reliable measurement with long service life.
The acid resistant version, PFTL 101AER/BER, is designed for the wet end of the paper machines and has a degree of protection of IP 66/67.

S800 I/O is a comprehensive, distributed and modular process I/O system that communicates with parent controllers and PLCs over industry-standard field buses. The TB840 ModuleBus Modem is a fiber optic interface to the Optical ModuleBus. TB840A is used in redundancy configurations where each module is connected to different optical ModuleBus lines, but connected to the same electrical ModuleBus.
The ModuleBus Modem has an electrical and an optical Modulebus interface which are logically the same bus. A maximum of 12 I/O modules can be connected to the electrical ModuleBus and up to seven clusters can be connected to the fiber optic ModuleBus. The fiber optic interface is intended for local distribution of I/O clusters and where more than 12 I/O modules are required in an I/O station.
