Product Overview
The HYDRAN M2-X is actually the Hydran M2-X transformer oil dissolved gas (DGA) and moisture monitoring device from General Electric (GE). It is a landmark product of GE’s more than 40 years of experience in transformer condition monitoring. This device is an upgraded version of the Hydran series DGA solution, with over 50,000 units deployed globally. It is widely used in the power, industrial, and utility sectors, aiming to prevent transformer failures and reduce the risk of unplanned power outages through real-time monitoring.
Core Functions and Technical Features
Multi-Parameter Monitoring
Real-time monitoring of dissolved gases (H₂, CO, C₂H₂, C₂H₄, etc.) and moisture content (ppm/%RH) in the oil, combined with IEEE/IEC standard mathematical models to analyze transformer operating status.
Expandable monitoring of parameters such as top oil temperature, load current, and winding hot spot temperature; supports integration with Kelman multi-gas DGA equipment and Multilin 845 protection relays to achieve simultaneous analysis of chemical and electrical data.
Monitoring Parameters
Gas Composite Values: Hydrogen (H₂), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Acetylene (C₂H₂), Ethylene (C₂H₄), measurement range 25-2000ppm, accuracy ±device reading × 10% ± 25ppm.
Moisture Content: 0-100% relative humidity (%RH/ppm), accuracy ±2%RH, response time 5 minutes.
Extended Functionality: Can integrate top-layer oil temperature and load current monitoring, combined with IEEE/IEC mathematical models (such as winding hotspot temperature and insulation aging estimation) for in-depth diagnostics.
Sensor Characteristics
The gas sensor uses an electrochemical detection principle, and the moisture sensor is a thin-film capacitive type.
The sensor has a lifespan exceeding 10 years, offers a 7-year warranty, and supports field upgrades to be compatible with new ester-based oils (natural/synthetic) or to expand monitoring functions.
Optional composite gas sensors (H₂, CO, C₂H₂, C₂H₄) or single hydrogen (H₂) sensors are available, with strong anti-interference capabilities.
Communication and Integration
Supports Modbus, DNP 3.0, IEC 61850, and other protocols, seamlessly integrating with the GE Perception™ platform, SCADA systems, and third-party APM tools..jpg)
Compatible with Kelman multi-gas DGA devices and Multilin 845 protection relays, enabling simultaneous analysis of chemical and electrical data.
Offers 4-20mA analog input/output interfaces, supporting Ethernet/fiber optic TCP/IP communication.
Long Lifespan and Low Maintenance
Utilizes fourth-generation PAS technology, with an estimated sensor lifespan exceeding 10 years. No moving parts, no on-site calibration or carrier gas consumption, resulting in low maintenance costs.
Provides a 7-year warranty, with over 50,000 units installed globally and over 40 years of field validation history.
Installation and Operation
Compact design, typically installed directly on transformer valves without power outages. Built-in display and keypad support local data visualization and operation.
Built-in moisture sensor detects insulation paper degradation and gasket leaks, aiding in the diagnosis of insulation system health.
Application Scenarios and Advantages
Suitable for: Utilities, industrial transformers (e.g., transmission transformers, generator step-up transformers, HVDC converter station transformers), mission-critical transformers (e.g., industrial process, data center power supply).
Core Value: Reduces unplanned downtime through early fault warnings, optimizes maintenance strategies, and improves transformer operational reliability; integrates with APM software to achieve cluster-level asset management, reducing total lifecycle costs.
Expansion Capabilities: Supports modular upgrades, integrating bushing monitoring, partial discharge detection, cooling system monitoring, and other functions to form a comprehensive diagnostic system.
Technical Parameters and Certifications
Operating Environment: -40°C to +55°C, humidity 0-95% RH (non-condensing).
Detection Accuracy: Gas concentration measurement error as low as ±5%, moisture measurement accuracy ±2% RH.
Certifications and Standards: Complies with relevant IEEE and IEC specifications, and has passed international certifications such as CE and UL..jpg)
Maintenance and Installation
Installation Requirements
Directly installed on transformer valves, no power outage required. Teflon tape must be used to seal the threads to avoid oil pressure fluctuations (0-700kPa).
Recommended installation location: Straight section of the radiator return pipe or injection valve, avoiding high-temperature areas (oil temperature -50℃ to +90℃, heater internal temperature maintained at 15℃ to 65℃).
Strict adherence to the installation manual is required; deviation from the procedure may damage the equipment or transformer.
Maintenance Features
No moving parts design, low maintenance costs, supports fleet-level asset performance management (APM) software integration.
Provides 5 sets of normally open/normally closed alarm contacts, supporting gas/moisture trend alarms and system self-diagnostics.
Summary
The Hydran M2-X is GE’s flagship product in transformer monitoring. With its long-life sensor, low-maintenance design, intelligent integration capabilities, and extensive field experience, it has become a key tool for preventative maintenance and asset management in the power industry. Its modular architecture and scalability allow it to adapt to the needs of transformers of different sizes, helping users transition from reactive to predictive maintenance.
