STARTER MODULE, commonly called a starting module/starting unit in the marine industry, is mainly used for the starting control of marine generators, emergency units, and auxiliary engines. It is commonly found in the control systems of marine power stations such as DEIF and Woodward, and is also used in the starting circuit of diesel engine auxiliary engines.

Main Functions

Diesel Engine Starting Logic Output: Receives the start command from the control system, outputs drive signals, controls the start solenoid valve and starter motor (air starter motor/electric starter motor), and completes the diesel engine starting process.

Starting Sequence Control: Controls the starting duration, starting interval, and number of retry attempts: prevents damage to the motor/air starter valve from prolonged continuous starting; after a starting failure, it retryes after a certain interval, and after reaching the maximum number of retry attempts, it locks the start and alarms.

Status Acquisition and Feedback: Collects diesel engine speed signals, operating status, and starting circuit feedback signals, transmitting “starting,” “starting successful,” and “starting failed” statuses back to the main controller.

Interlock Protection: Features interlock condition verification: If lubricating oil pressure, turning gear position, or interlock signal is not met, the start command is prohibited; after successful start, the start output is immediately cut off to prevent continuous motor operation.

Fault Alarm: Outputs a fault alarm and reports to the ship’s monitoring system in case of start-up timeout, starting circuit failure, or exhaustion of start-up retry attempts.

Working Principle:

Standby State: The module continuously receives external interlock signals (turning gear disengagement, no-stop interlock, etc.). If all interlock conditions are met, the module allows start-up.

Start Command Received: A start command is sent from the upper-level power station controller/local panel. The module verifies the interlock conditions; if the conditions are met, it outputs a drive signal to drive the air start valve or starter motor, and the diesel engine begins to rotate.

Interlock Protection: Timing and Speed ​​Judgment: The module’s internal timer starts timing while simultaneously monitoring the diesel engine speed signal:

If the speed rises to the “running confirmation speed,” the start is considered successful, the start output is immediately canceled, and the module enters standby mode.

If the timer reaches the set start time but the speed still does not reach the running speed, the start is considered a failure, the output is cut off, and the module enters a cooling waiting period.

Retry Logic: After a failure, the module waits for the cooling period and automatically initiates the next start attempt. When the set maximum number of starts is reached, the module locks the start, outputs a start failure alarm, and requires manual reset.

Safety Interlock Cutoff: If a turning gear engagement or emergency stop signal is detected during operation, all start outputs are immediately prohibited.

Typical Marine Application Scenarios:

Main generator and emergency generator diesel engine start control

Auxiliary diesel engine (air compressor, fire pump diesel engine) start control

Integrated into the DEIF and Woodward generator set controller systems; some are independent external STARTER MODULE hardware boards.
