I. Operating Principle
The YNT511D is an industrial isolated switching power supply based on a DC-DC isolated voltage-regulation architecture. A 24V DC input is connected to the module, where it first passes through an EMI filter and an anti-reverse polarity circuit—designed to suppress line interference and prevent damage from incorrect polarity connection. The power is then fed into a high-frequency switching conversion circuit, utilizing an isolation transformer to electrically decouple the input side from the system backplane output side. Subsequently, a voltage-regulation control loop and multi-channel output regulation circuits convert the power into the various rated DC voltages required by the DCS backplane bus, supplying power to controllers and I/O nodes via the rack backplane. The module features built-in detection and protection circuitry that monitors input voltage, output voltage, output current, and temperature in real time. If any parameter exceeds its defined threshold, the system automatically triggers protective measures and illuminates a fault indicator on the front panel. In a redundant configuration, two YNT511D units of the same model operate in parallel with load-sharing; should one unit fail or go offline, the other seamlessly assumes the full load, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply and eliminating the risk of a single point of failure.
II. Key Product Advantages
Strong DC Input Compatibility: With a rated input of 24V DC (±10%), this module is compatible with DC UPS systems and battery-backed power solutions. It is the preferred power supply module for DC power distribution architectures in control rooms. Please note that this unit is distinct from AC-input models (such as the PW481 or PW482) and cannot be used interchangeably with them. Redundant Hot-Standby and High Availability: Native support for 1:1 dual-redundant, hot-swappable configurations. Faulty modules can be replaced online without interrupting the DCS system, meeting the high-reliability requirements of continuous production facilities.
Comprehensive Built-in Protection: Integrated overvoltage, overcurrent, short-circuit, and overtemperature protection. In the event of a fault, the unit locks down to protect downstream controllers and I/O modules, preventing secondary damage.
Visual Fault Diagnostics: Equipped with “POWER OK,” “FAULT,” and “ALARM” indicators on the front panel, allowing on-site maintenance personnel to quickly assess the power status—identifying normal operation, faults, or alarms—thereby reducing troubleshooting time.
Standardized Rack-Mount, Plug-in Design: Compatible with Yokogawa base units such as the AFV30D, A2FV70D, ANB10D, and ANB11D. The compact, natural-convection-cooled design eliminates the need for external fans, reducing potential points of failure.
Robust Industrial Interference Resistance: Compliant with industrial EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) standards. The PCB is available with an optional conformal coating to resist dust, humidity, and electromagnetic interference, making it well-suited for the complex industrial environments of control rooms. It features a 120W rated output, high conversion efficiency, and low heat generation.
Long-Term Stable Operation: Designed for an 8-year service life under standard operating conditions. CE-certified and engineered to meet the requirements for long-term, uninterrupted operation in the process industry.
III. Target Industries and Applications
The YNT511D serves as a core power supply unit for DCS control systems in process industries where unplanned shutdowns are not an option. Its primary function is to ensure a continuous and stable power supply to DCS control hosts and I/O nodes, preventing plant shutdowns, safety incidents, or material losses caused by power interruptions. Oil and Gas Industry: Used in DCS control cabinets for oil and gas gathering and transportation, long-distance pipelines, and LNG receiving terminals. When paired with a DC battery-based UPS, this module ensures the control system remains operational during a power grid failure, maintaining critical functions such as emergency interlocking and the output of monitoring signals.
Petrochemical and Chemical Industries: Applied in refining, fine chemical, and coal-chemical facilities. The redundant power supply architecture ensures uninterrupted operation of control loops for continuous processes, such as those in reaction vessels and distillation units.
Power Industry: Utilized in the auxiliary control systems of thermal power plants and renewable energy power stations. It integrates with DC power distribution panels to ensure the stability of DCS and auxiliary equipment control systems.
Water Treatment, Pulp and Paper, and Pharmaceutical Industries: Employed in large-scale continuous production lines and centralized control systems for wastewater treatment, meeting requirements for process continuity and operational safety.
Other Process Automation Retrofit Projects: Includes upgrades for legacy CENTUM VP systems, expansion of control cabinet capacity, and replacement of power supply components.
IV. Standard Operating Procedures
(I) Pre-installation Inspection
Verify that the model is YNT511D. Inspect the module for any physical damage and ensure that the connectors are free from oxidation. Confirm that the base unit is compatible. Ensure the input circuit is powered off; use a multimeter to verify that the 24VDC input voltage and polarity are correct, and confirm that the insulation of the wiring meets requirements.
(II) Rack Installation
With the power turned off, slide the module smoothly along the rack guide rails into the base unit, then tighten the panel fixing screws. In redundant configurations, connect the two YNT511D modules to two independent 24VDC power supply circuits, ensuring that the two power sources remain separate. (III) Power-on Commissioning
After verifying that all wiring is correct, close the upstream 24V DC power supply switch.
Observe the front panel to ensure the green “POWER OK” indicator is steadily lit, and that neither the red “FAULT” indicator nor the “ALARM” indicator is illuminated.
In redundant configurations, toggle each of the two power supply paths individually to verify that the redundancy switching function operates correctly; the DCS controller must remain powered, and communication must not be interrupted during the switchover.
Connect to the DCS system diagnostic software to check the status of the power supply modules and confirm that there are no system alarms.
(IV) Online Replacement (Redundant Mode)
When operating in a redundant configuration, a module can be replaced via “hot-swapping”: loosen the panel screws and carefully pull out the faulty module. Verify the model number of the replacement module before inserting it into the base, then tighten the screws. Wait for the power indicators to show normal status and confirm via system diagnostics that the unit is functioning correctly—no system downtime is required.
Hot-swapping is not supported when operating in single-module mode; the input power must be disconnected before removing or inserting a module, which will result in a system shutdown.
V. Important Precautions
Strictly distinguish between models; do not mix them. The YNT511D is designed for 24V DC input, while the PW481 and PW482 series are designed for AC input. Due to differing electrical specifications, they are not interchangeable. When procuring or replacing spare parts, always verify the full model number, including the “S1” suffix.
Power Supply Circuit Requirements: The two redundant input power sources must originate from independent supply branches. They must not share the same upstream fuse or battery branch; otherwise, the redundant architecture will be rendered ineffective. The input voltage must be maintained within the range of 19.2V to 26.4V DC. Prolonged exposure to overvoltage or undervoltage conditions will accelerate module aging and trigger protective shutdowns. Environmental Conditions: The standard module operating temperature range is 0°C to 50°C. Ensure adequate ventilation within the control cabinet and keep heat dissipation channels clear. Prevent the formation of condensation, the presence of corrosive gases, or the accumulation of excessive dust inside the cabinet. Only versions with a protective (conformal) coating are suitable for use in high-humidity environments.
Handling After Protection Triggers: If a module locks due to a short circuit or overcurrent protection, first disconnect the input power. Investigate and resolve any short-circuit faults in the backplane or connected modules. Once the fault is cleared, the module may be powered back on; do not repeatedly attempt to force the unit to power on.
Hot-Swapping Restrictions: Online hot-swapping is supported only in redundant configurations. When a module is operating in a non-redundant (single-module) setup, power must be disconnected only after the industrial process has been safely shut down and isolated.
Grounding Requirements: Ensure reliable protective grounding for the rack and control cabinet. Grounding resistance must comply with standards for automation instrumentation to minimize abnormal alarms caused by static electricity or interference.
Maintenance and Spare Parts: Regularly inspect the status of indicator lights and the temperature inside the control cabinet. To prevent unexpected failures due to aging, plan for the replacement of modules once they reach their recommended service life. Store spare parts in a dry, dark environment.
Repair Restrictions: The module is an integrated industrial power unit containing no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open or disassemble a faulty module; instead, return the entire unit to the manufacturer for repair or replace it with a new one.
